I’m a few days late with posting about latest update from Google and a new animal on horizon – Google Penguin. Google makes updates in algorithm about 600 times per year, Penguin is known a little bit more because it made impact to a lot of websites.
What the heck is Google Penguin?
It’s a new Google’s algorithm, called Webspam algorithm update by Matt Cutts.
Opinions and effects
Opinions about Google Penguin update are pretty bad in general. One of our friends has 2 websites from same sports niche, both were ranked pretty well for certain difficult keyword in Google. Both websites are connected with private network of smaller websites from same niche and both sites didn’t have any SEO optimization made on them for more than 3 months. Both sites were optimized for same keywords.
Site A was optimized by the book with pure whitehat SEO techniques and has rich and unique content. It was ranked #20 for highly competitive and difficult keyword.
Site B is connected to the same private network of relevant sites as site A, but it was optimized with blackhat SEO techniques and doesn’t have rich content on it. Rank for the same competitive keyword was at #26.
Logic sense tells that Site B shouldn’t survive latest Google Penguin update and Site A should stay intact. This was Google’s goal, but… Site A lost it’s rankings for the most important keyword and is now nowhere to be found among Google search results. Site B is now ranked at #24, that means it’s rank got improved and Penguin didn’t recognize blackhat link building on it.
